Order of the Star of Italy Recognizes Carlo Di Ruocco for Strengthening International Bonds
In early June, our family had the great honor of accepting an award on behalf of our late father, Carlo Di Ruocco. He was posthumously named Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy (Ufficiale dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia), an elevation from the knighthood (Cavaliere) he received in 2009. This award recognizes individuals who have strengthened the bonds between Italy and other countries. For our father, coffee and food were his bridge from his hometown of Salerno to the Bay Area.
Carlo promoted Italian culture in the United States in countless ways. Through his pioneering work introducing wood-roasted espresso to the Bay Area, his support of Italian organizations, and his lifelong dedication to craftsmanship and community, he brought a taste of Italy to daily American life. He supported the San Carlo Opera’s visit to San Francisco, contributed to the remodel of the Italian Consulate’s outdoor plaza, and was a devoted member of the Accademia Italiana della Cucina.
About the honor, Carlo’s son, Luigi Di Ruocco, wrote, “What Carlo accomplished in his lifetime is enough for any man to be proud of, especially after leaving his native country for an unknown one, with no certainty or promise of success. We are extremely lucky for the legacy he left behind. This award is a perfect example of that legacy.”
