Mr. Espresso: This Esteemed Coffee Roaster Is Right in Our Backyard

In a feature for Haute Living, Bay Area-based food and wine writer Fran Miller pays tribute to Mr. Espresso’s 45+ year history and its singular focus on craftsmanship.

“Mr. Espresso’s wood-fired approach brings warmth and roundness, producing coffee that’s nuanced and deeply drinkable,” she writes. “Each batch is roasted slowly, allowing the wood’s natural heat to coax out caramelized sugars and chocolate notes without overpowering the bean’s inherent character.”

It’s a technique that demands patience and precision. And to this day, Mr. Espresso remains one of the few roasters in the country dedicated to this old-world method, which imbues their coffee with a depth that’s both distinctive and comforting.
