La Libertad, Huehuetenango

Guatemala La Bolsa comes from a special place that has long been cultivated by a coffee visionary. In 1958, Dr. Jorge Vides purchased a piece of property with barely any coffee planted in La Libertad, Huehuetenango. The first harvest only yielded 100 to 200 pounds of parchment coffee. From there, Dr. Vides proceeded to cultivate bourbon and caturra coffee varieties in his spare time. He continued to run his clinic in the area while he spent his free time working on growing the coffee farm. In 1980 he founded a school on the farm that is still educating students today. The farm continued to grow over the years. Today the farm is run by Jorge’s daughter Maria Elena and his grandson Renardo Ovalle. The coffee, grown at 4,900 to 5,500 feet, is washed and sun dried on large patios.
