Why do you roast over wood?
It’s an old-fashioned roasting technique that Carlo Di Ruocco brought with him from Italy. We’re among the very few American companies that still roast over a wood fire.
It’s a time-consuming and difficult technique to master, but we believe the quality of the heat delivered to the beans results in a superior espresso roast. Heat derived from wood has higher moisture content and is better suited for slow roasting. The natural humidity within the wood seems to envelop the beans during the roasting process, preserving more of the oils within. Meanwhile, the slow roasting aspect ensures the coffee is lower in acidity and higher in body. The result is most apparent in our espresso, yielding more crema, fuller flavor, and a smoother finish
Is there really a Mr. Espresso?
Yes! The original Mr. Espresso is the founder of the company, Carlo Di Ruocco. That’s his face on our coffee bags. In the early days, customers really called him “Mr. Espresso.” You can read more about Carlo and the Di Ruocco family here.
How do you source your beans?
We are proud to have longstanding relationships with growers around the world. Mr. Espresso’s VP of Coffee John Di Ruocco travels regularly to coffee farms to meet the people behind the beans. He supports producers who give back to their communities and offer fair wages to their farmers. Mr. Espresso seeks out women-led farms, small producers, organic producers, and Regenerative Organic Certified certified coffees.
